Criteria for Admissions:
All enrolments at Advanced Learning Schools are made by the Admissions office based on the academic level as well as space availability. Acceptance is given to students on a first come first served basis. Criteria for enrolment include age, entrance examination, previous school records, English and Arabic language proficiency, learning achievement and the ability to make tuition and fee payments.
Age Requirement:
Ministry of regulation no.32971247 dated May 10, 2011 effective 2011-2012 academic year, states that a child who is 5 years and 6 months at the beginning of the school year may enter Grade 1 providing that he or she has been in a KG programme for two consecutive semesters and has a certificate from that school. This is based on the Hijri Calendar which translates into 3 years and 5 months on the Gregorian Calendar.
Based on this, ALS has decided to accept students into KG 1 who are 3 years and 6 months Hijri date (3years and 5 months Gregorian Date) in order to accommodate them entering Grade 1 at the age of 5 years and 6 months. However, the child must meet the admissions requirements including the entrance examination in order to ensure that he/she will succeed in this grade level.
Grade Level Approximate Age as of September 1, 2013
KG I 3 years and 6 months
KG II 4 years and 6 months
Grade 1 5 years and 6 months or (5 Years and six months or if they have been in a KG programme)
Previous School Records
Students applying for admission to Grade 2 until Grade 10 are required to submit their previous original school records. Once the student completes the entrance examination and is offered admissions to ALS, the admissions office will issue a Request for Transcript Letter (RFT letter) to the parents in order for them to submit it to their previous school. This will ensure that the previous school will release the records to the parents. Students applying to Grade 11 normally have to be transferring from an IB diploma school and the number of credits earned will be evaluated by both the Diploma Programme Coordinator and the Principal in order to decide whether the student is able to graduate in Grade 12.
Entrance Examination
All applicants are required to complete an entrance examination in order to evaluate their English and Arabic language proficiency as well as their Mathematics skills. For students applying to KGI and KGII they will be given tests that are developmentally appropriate for their age. Passing this examination is mandatory for acceptance to ALS. The examinations will be administered by the counselors who will then forward the results as well as his/her recommendations to the principals for final approval. Once the approval is reached the Admissions office will then notify the parents of the results and ask the parents to complete the necessary paperwork for admissions. Approval can also be on a conditional basis if the student demonstrates weakness in one of the areas being tested. If this is the case then a time frame is set in which the student must demonstrate the required proficiency in that area in order for them to be promoted to the next grade level. An entrance fee of 3,000 S.R. is due before the student takes the examination and this fee is non-refundable. If the student fails the entrance examination then, upon the Principal's approval can be retested again in six months. If a student is applying for Grade 1 - Grade 8 and satisfies all enrolment criteria but has an English language deficiency then a recommendation can be made to provide ESOL support.
