Advanced Learning Schools at
The XLIV Hague International Model United
Nations, The Netherlands
Thousands of delegates from
all over the world came together in January
2012 to participate in the XLIV Model United
Nations in The Hague, The Netherlands. The
ALS was present there for the first time as
a country delegation of ten students.
Al Jowhara Khalid Abdullah
Abu Nayyan, Modhi Abdullah Fahad Al
Gheshayan, Al Jawharah Mansour Abdulaziz Al
Degaither, Sarah Abdulaziz Fahad Al Saud,
Turki Ahmed Khalid Al Saud, Abdullah Khalid
Mohammed Al Saud, Khalid Faisal Abdulaziz Al
Saud, Saud Turki Abdulrahman Al Saud, Hassan
Ali Moussa Al Omran, and Salman Abdulaziz
Fahad Al Saud represented Guyana in the
THIMUN 2012.
The theme of the XLIV THIMUN
was Seas and Oceans and our students
represented Guyana as delegates: Hassan,
Khaled and Turki in the General Assembly,
Salman and Saud in the Disarmament
Commission, Abdullah and Al Jawharah Mansour
in the Environment Commission, Modhi in the
Human Rights Protection, and Sarah and Al
Jowhara Khalid in the Special Commission for
Seas and Oceans. In the opening and closing
ceremonies, Salman, our delegation’s
ambassador marched, along with all the flag
bearers, in the processions.
During the day, all the
commissions met, discussed and lobbied and
then finally merged their resolutions. Our
delegates did not miss a chance to
participate and even succeeded in
contributing to resolutions that eventually
passed; thus, making this particular
experience a very worthwhile one.
On a similar related note to
this year’s THIMUN theme, Saudi Aramco, the
main sponsor of the conference invited us
along with the British, American & Jeddah
Knowledge International Schools on a tour of
the UNESCO International Institute for
Infrastructural, Hydraulic and Environmental
Engineering (UNESCO-IHE). A prominent Dutch
professor of Water Management commenced this
visit with a very informative lecture on
water management in The Netherlands.
Finally, it needs to be
mentioned that our students represented ALS
and Saudi Arabia in the most positive manner
worthy of praise. They interacted socially
and exchanged experiences with other
participants in this internationally
acclaimed conference. We only hope now that
this experience will be the first of many
for our young leaders!

ALS at THIMUN Qatar

Qatar was the
destination for some of our ALS students in
November 2011 to join around 1200 other
school students from 71 countries to
participate in The Hague International Model
United Nations (THIMUN) on Crime and
Punishment at the Qatar National Convention
Center.
Sarah Mashhour Al Noman, Reema Ahmad Al
Salem, Modhi Abdullah Al Gheshayan, Al
Jawharah Mansour Al Degaither, Sarah
Abdullah Shaker, Turki Ahmed Al Saud, Hassan
Ali Al Omran, and Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud
were the ALS delegates representing the
Czech Republic in the THIMUN Qatar 2011.
The key issues our delegates tackled were
related to human rights, protection of the
environment, economic development,
disarmament, the problems of youth and of
refugees and the critical subject of
conflict resolution. The delegates spent
many hours discussing, lobbying and then
merging their resolutions. Afterwards, they
voted for them and those that passed were
finally sent to the United Nations
Headquarters. This learning experience was
definitely beyond successful, since it
provided a chance for students to play the
roles of country representatives and
ambassadors.
An added bonus to the Qatar Trip was our
scheduled visit to the Education City of
Doha. We passed through the whole city but
specifically visited Georgetown University
at the request of Salman. The GT Admissions
Office gave us a warm welcome and took us on
a tour of all the state of the art
facilities. At the end, since the visit
exceeded our expectations, we wished that we
had time to visit the other five
universities at the Education City.
Finally, on behalf of all the ALS community,
I would like to thank our THIMUN Qatar
delegates for the impressive representation
of ALS at the conference!

In
March 2011, 22 ALS 10th & 11th
grade students participated in the Dubai
International Academy Model United Nations (DIAMUN)
Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The
Dubai International Academy Model United Nations is
one of The Hague International Model United Nations’
(THIMUN) affiliated conferences, in which students
are given the opportunity to hone their talents and
skills as ambassadors of member-states of the United
Nations in a context that closely parallels the real
world.
Around 416 future global leaders representing 28
schools from nine countries gathered at DIAMUN 2011
between March 23 and 26. This year's DIAMUN was held
under the theme, "The Advancement of Technology".
DIAMUN used this theme as a vehicle to discuss the
impact of technology on topics such as: disarmament
and international security; social, humanitarian and
cultural concern and issues surrounding the economic
and financial health of the world community.
Our
ALS students were successful in learning vital
skills in research, writing, speaking, consensus
building and conflict resolution as they stepped
into the role of delegates for the countries they
represented.

ALS at KAMUN 2010
Dear All,
We are pleased to announce that our school participated in
the Model United Nations at the King’s Academy (KAMUN), in
Jordan, between 24th February and 28th
February 2010.
KAMUN was held at the Kempinski Hotel Center, located next
to the Dead Sea, geographically the lowest point on earth.
At this conference students from different schools came
together to debate and draft solutions to many problems
facing the planet. These included questions of human rights
as well as social, political and environmental issues. As is
the case in the real United Nations assembly, secondary
school students represented specific countries. They
delineated their own nation’s interests, engaged in debates
on vital issues and came to a deeper understanding of world
affairs.
We also enjoyed other activities during the conference such
as beach football and swimming. On the final day the
students heard a speech presented by the
Jordanian Prime Minister, HE Samir Al-Rifai.
Six male students participated, with Mr. Bilal Dalia acting
as their MUN leader:
-
Abdullah Faisal Al-Saud-grade 12
-
Mohammad Mansour Al-Degaither-grade12
-
Msaed Khalid Al-Saud-grade 11
-
Turki Ahmad Al-Shaikh-grade 11
-
Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud-grade 10
-
Faisal Turki Al-Saud-grade 10
In general this trip was very educational and the students
did a great job.
